Woofer vs. Subwoofer
A woofer and a subwoofer both move air to make low sound, but they cover different parts of the low end — and knowing where one stops and the other begins tells you when you actually need a sub.
The woofer
A woofer handles low and low-mid frequencies — roughly 50 Hz up to a few hundred Hz — the warmth and body of most music and the foundation of the vocal range. In a two- or three-way speaker it works alongside a tweeter, and often a midrange, split by a crossover.
The subwoofer
A subwoofer specializes in the lowest octaves — roughly 20 Hz to 80–100 Hz — the range you feel as much as hear: kick drum weight, bass drops, cinematic rumble. It is built with a large, long-throw driver in an enclosure tuned to move a lot of air.

When do you need a subwoofer?
- Dance floors and DJ sets — the felt low end is the point; a sub is essential.
- Larger rooms — mains alone rarely deliver deep bass to a crowd.
- Speech-only events — often fine without a sub; the vocal range lives higher up.
