Passive vs. Powered Speakers

The difference between passive and powered speakers is simply where the amplifier lives — outside the box, or inside it. That one choice changes how you build and carry a system.
Passive speakers
A passive speaker has no built-in amplifier. It needs an external amp, connected with speaker cable, and it's the amp that determines power and the load rules you have to respect — impedance, wiring, all of it.
Powered (active) speakers
A powered speaker has the amplifier built in, matched to its drivers at the factory. You feed it a line-level signal and plug it into power. Impedance matching is handled for you, which removes a whole category of mistakes.
